Herbs (Units 051-052)

1. Herb Definition

Herbs are not necessarily Herbaceous plants. Bay Leaves come from

Laurus nobilis, which is a woody Mediterranean shrub or small tree.

For this class an Herb is any plant or plant part that has historically been used,

or is used today, for culinary, medicinal, fragrance, color dying, or other

household purposes.

2. Herbs vs. Spices

There is no clear definition of herbs vs. spices. In units 051-052, some spices are

included, such as Cinnamon, which is actually tree bark.

Herbs are usually temperate plants that are hardy in the United States.

Spices are usually tropical plants such as cloves, cinnamon, or nutmeg.
