Unit 7 (007)

1. Poison Ivy

A number of plants can cause a dermatitis or rash, but poison ivy is the most common

one. Read the article on “Facts frequently misunderstood about poison ivy”.

Remember that the sap or resin can last for many years on tool handles, lawn mowers

etc. Ten years later you can pick up a tool and the resin can still cause a reaction.

2. See Unit 8 notes on Trumpet Vine rash

3. Rabbit Damage

Euonymus alata often has the lower bark eaten by rabbits in the winter when there

is snow cover. The bark apparently tastes better and seems preferred by rabbits.

Usually the damage is deep enough to kill the stems above.

4. Euonymus Scale Insects

Euonymus fortunei and Euonymus europaea are often affected by scale insects that

cause yellow spots or yellowing of the leaves. The male scale insects are white and the

female insects are brown. See Euonymus fortunei in SaylorPlants for problem photos.

5. Euonymus Crown gall

Crown gall is a bacterial disease that causes cherry or plum size growths around the

stems. Since this is an internal bacterial problem, removal of the affected plants is

the only remedy.
