1. Comptonia peregrina or Sweet Fern

Sweet fern fixes nitrogen and is drought tolerant. It grows in metal contaminated soils

and in soil left after strip mining for coal. In the 1960's in Pennsylvania, I saw it growing

as the only plant on acid soil left from strip mining.
