Cover Letter Guidelines

1. Write to a specific individual rather than a personnel office.

2. Personalize each letter with a sentence or two to show interest in that specific employer.

Find out something about the company from their web site, printed literature, or advertisements.

3. Use simple and clear sentences. Don't use long rambling sentences. Short sentences are best.

4. List your capabilities with confidence, but avoid exaggerating.

5. Mention activities, honors, and special skills that are not included in your resume.

6. Check and recheck your letter for grammar and spelling.

Errors may eliminate you from job consideration.

7. Finish your letter with a strong statement about your interest in becoming part of that organization.

8. Your cover letter should be handed in before you enroll in Hrt 493.
