Hrt 493, Professional Internship, Jesse Saylor, Coordinator (749-6180)


The objective of the professional internship is to provide you with an opportunity for

continued professional growth and development through a practical work experience in your

area of specialization.


This is a required class for all horticulture majors completing the Bachelor of Science Degree.

Three credits (pass/no pass grading system) are earned for each enrollment, with an option for reenrolling

one additional semester for a second internship experience. An internship generally is scheduled for the

summer preceding the junior or senior year after completion of HRT 203, 203L, and HRT 204. You are

encouraged to select an employer for whom you have not worked previously.


You must enroll for HRT 493 the semester in which you plan to complete the internship.


Requirements:


1. Successfully complete 12 weeks of full-time, career-related employment.

             This is done with an internship agreement.


2. Submit a resume and employment cover letter to your advisor, and the undergraduate office.

These should be submitted to the undergraduate office before you enroll in Hrt 493.

When you enroll, you need an override from Terrie in the undergraduate office.


3. Submit an Internship Agreement when you accept an internship job.

This is a non binding agreement of understanding between you and the employer.

4. Submit weekly reports to your advisor, during your internship.

Weekly reports keep your advisor informed about how things are going,

They also allow your advisor to help if things are not going as planned.

5. Receive a satisfactory Final evaluation from your Internship employer.

6. Submit a final report to your advisor, and the undergraduate office.

This should be a 3-5 page report of your experience during the 12 weeks.
List useful things you learned, and also courses you see a need for taking.
List the strengths and weaknesses of the company, and how that impacted your experience.

Some Final Reports from previous semesters are in the undergraduate office.


7. Present a 5-7 minute summary of your Internship work experience to the Fall Semester

HRT 207 class (Professional Career Development in Horticulture).

This is to be done with a Powerpoint presentation.

In the Fall, you will receive an email about how to schedule your time in the Hrt 207 class.

 

During your internship, take pictures of jobs before and after completion, and other activities

that will enhance your presentation.
