The RSPCA has been helping animals and their owners in York since 1864. The first "Home for Lost Dogs" opened on St George's Field in 1944. It had very few facilities and was replaced in 1956 by the building on Castle Mills Bridge where the boat office is today. Saskia is an 11-year-old American Akita, currently living at RSPCA's York Animal Home. She was brought to the centre by an inspector, who found that her needs were not being met in her previous home. The RSPCA describes Saskia as a "sweet and gentle girl" who is always waiting on a morning with a waggy tail, ready to greet you with a big cuddle. Our dogs begin their rehoming in Foster homes. • Transporting. We will always need help with transporting dogs, either to collect, deliver, or do ‘vet runs’. • Home Checking. One of the big draws of the RSPCA York, Harrogate and District Branch Easter Fair is the annual dog show, however with lockdown in full effect the fair had to be cancelled along with all of its activities. Now with the help of a team of local web developers the Animal Show is moving online and entries are now open.
